Dr. Seuss, Rhythm and Beat
I love reading Dr. Seuss books and I hope you do too. Watch one, two or all of the videos below. They are famous Dr. Seuss books that have been turned into songs. As you listen, you can use body percussion (clap, bang, snap....be creative) to play along with a steady beat or to play the rhythm. Remember....the beat always stays the same and the rhythm changes (the syllables of the words usually follow the rhythm). I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Week of April 27-May 1
High and Low
We're going to review high and low this week. Let's start with another episode of the Music Show. This one is is called "The Music Show: We're Gonna Sing High, Low and in the Middle".
In class we talked about the nursery rhyme "Jack and Jill". We used xylophones and metallophones to make Jack and Jill go "up" the hill and we discovered that the notes changed as they went "up" the hill. Do you remember which end of our instruments played the higher notes and which end played the lower notes? Using the online xylophone (click here) practice playing high and low notes.
Challenge yourself!! Can you use the xylophone to play a 4 beat rhythm (ta, ti-ti, sh or tika-tika) that you've written? Can you play the beginning of "Hot Cross Buns" (B, A, G, B, A, G)? Can you make your own song and play it? Do you think you can play "Baby Shark" (Hint: It beings with G, A, C.)? If you'd like to send me a video of anything you've created using the xylophone, please email it to me at [email protected].

Week of April 20-24
Loud and Quiet
The weather is warming up so let's do a fun music activity outside. This week, go for a walk with a family member. As you're walking listen to the sounds in your neighbourhood. Say out loud one sound you hear and tell your family whether it is loud or quiet. If the sound is loud, use body percussion to make a loud sound of your own. If the sound is quiet, use body percussion to make a quiet sound of your own. When you finish, listen for a new sound and start again. Can you find new sounds on your entire walk? Count how many different sounds you hear. You can email me a list of your sounds and the number you found at [email protected]. Let's see who finds the most! Finally, before or after your walk, you can watch "The Music Show: Loud and Quiet" or Mr. Gossard's "The Loud and Soft Song". Click on the song name to see the video.
Remember.......body percussion is any sound you can make using your body! Stomp your feet, clap your hands, pat your belly.....be as creative with your sounds as you would like!

Homemade Percussion Instruments
We have talked about the percussion family of instruments in class. Do you remember how sound is made with these instruments (scrape, shake or bang) and what they can be made of? If you don't quite remember what percussion instruments look or sound like, click here to watch a video. With help from family members, can you find or make instruments in the following categories:
When you have instruments from each category, make a 4 beat rhythm using ta, ti-ti, tika-tika or sh. Play your rhythm with your instruments. Download the sheet at the top to write your rhythms or draw 4 squares on a white board and you'll be able to easily erase your rhythm and make a new one! Remember, each square equals one beat.

Chrome Music Lab - Song Maker
If you'd like to make your own music, try Chrome Music Lab - Song Maker musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker/. Fill in the blocks in any pattern that you like and that adds the notes. You can change the pitched instruments and percussion instruments, add your own voice, and change the tempo (speed). If you'd like to save your creation and download it to your computer, have a family member help you complete the following steps:
Feel free to email me your creation at [email protected]. I'd love to hear what you've made!

If you don't quite remember what percussion instruments look or sound like, click here to watch a video. With help from family members, can you find or make instruments in the following categories:
- Woods: You could use two wooden spoons, popsicle sticks, or chopsticks. Do you have other ideas for wood percussion instruments.?
- Metals: Two metal spoons that you can hit together, an old baking pan you can hit with a spoon or reusable straw, two stainless steel reusable straws, metal measuring cups. Do you have anything else you could use?
- Drum: Anything that is safe to hit with your hands. You could use an upside down bowl, cardboard box, or plastic container. Be creative, you may have something else in your house you could use!
- Shakers: Making shakers is a fun project. Small plastic containers with lids work great! Rocks, gum, chocolate almonds, nickels, pennies, rice, or macaroni. Can you think of anything else that would work? Fill up as many shakers as you can with only one type of material in each. Shake them and listen to the sound they make.
